What is a reference book?

A consultation book it is a central resource or repository of ideas, quotes, anecdotes, observations and information that you find throughout your life and your educational activities. The purpose of the book is to record and organize these gems for use later in your life, in your business, in your writing, in your lectures, or in whatever you do.

These books have been preserved by some of the greatest men and women in history. One was preserved by Marcus Aurelius and ended up forming the Meditations. Petrarch kept one. The man who created the essay, Montaigne, assembled a handwritten collection of proverbs, maxims, and quotes that he considered significant from literature and history. His early essays were essentially compilations of these ideas. Thomas Jefferson kept one. Alexander kept one. As his biographer described it, HL Mencken “methodically crammed notebooks with quips, documenting bits of conversation and jargon” and his favorite passages from newspaper columns he liked. Bill Gates keeps one.

Not only did all these well-known and accomplished characters do it. Ordinary people have done it too throughout history. For example, the availability of inexpensive journals and notebooks for soldiers to record their thoughts contributed to the development of our true understanding of the American Civil War. The history of pocket notebooks was recently the subject of an amazing article in Art of Manliness. Some have even claimed that Pinterest is a contemporary version of the notebook.

And if you still don’t understand why, let me provide you with this quote from Seneca (which I found through my own reading and aprecies):

“We must hunt down the useful teachings and the courageous and noble sayings that are capable of immediate practical application – not fancy or archaic expressions or fancy metaphors and figures of speech – and learn them so well that words become deeds.”

How to do it the right way?

Seeks. Read it all and be open to finding the best. Write down passages, words, anecdotes, events and information that stand out.

Wisdom, not facts. Not just random data. whatBecause? Over the course of a lifetime or a few years, your sourcebook could accumulate real wisdom to call upon in moments of crisis, opportunity, depression, or work.

When you finish the book, put it down for a week. Let it rest in your head. Now go back to it and go through all the material you have saved and transfer the marginals and passages to a notebook.

It doesn’t have to be just book stuff. They also serve movies, speeches, vídeos or conversations. Anything. Anything good.

Really writing things down is vital. I know it’s easier to keep a Google plus Doc or Evernote project with your favorite quotes… but easy has nothing to do with it.

Technology is great, don’t get me wrong. But there are things that require effort. Personally, I prefer to stick to the system that worked for many others before.

Don’t let it accumulate. Lots of people bookmark passages or turn pages of things they like. Then they stop doing anything with it. I assure you, nothing will make you procrastinate like seeing a giant stack of books that you have to review and take aprecies on. You perro avoid this by not letting them accumulate. Don’t go months or weeks without reviewing them. You have to be aware.

Start now. Don’t leave it for later. Don’t write to me about how great the iniciativa is and how you wish you had time to do it. Yes you have time. But start now and stop putting it off. Make it a priority. Will be worth. I promise you.
