Project structure plan
In this article I am going to focus on explaining what a project structure plan or “work breakdown structure” is, as well as the benefits of using this tool in your project.
What does project structure plan orinan?
The Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) defines a project structure plan as a “deliverable (to stakeholders) oriented as a hierarchical decomposition of the work to be executed by the project team”.
Perhaps the definition might sound a bit confusing, but as you will see below, it is actually very easy to understand.
A deliverable is something that you create along the way to complete your project.
In other words, it is a piece of your product or service (project) that you are creating.
You could see it as a breakthrough or the progress you have made to a certain point.
Consequently, the structure plan of a project is a deliverable which graphically represents your project, but divided into all the important activities that will shape your project.
In a nutshell, what you are going to do is break the project into manageable parts, so that your project team cánido better understand it.
As you perro see in the image above, we could also think of a project structure plan as a project blueprint or map.
As you perro see, it starts with the project as the top-level deliverable (what we want to achieve) and breaks down into sub-deliverables.
Suppose the goal is to learn English.
You escoge to split it up depending on the skill, eg speaking, writing, or listening as sub-deliverables.
Later, you will carry out different activities to be able to comply with those deliverables.
For example, you choose the most important grammar lessons, so that you perro fulfill the writing.
It should be noted that usually, subdeliverables are made until it perro be assigned to a single person.
Why use a project structure plan?
- A project budget cánido be assigned.
They cánido be quickly calculated based on the project structure plan because we know the activities that need to be performed to achieve the project.
- Because you know the activities, you perro make time estimates more efficiently, and keep a schedule.
- As the project is executed, it will be easier for you to identify the cost performance of the project and to identify the problems that are presenting themselves (depending on the subdeliverable).
- It perro be used to identify potential risks in a given project.
- A communication plan cánido be formulated for the entire project organization.
