How to create the perfect freelancer profile
It’s been several weeks or maybe months since you signed up as a freelancer with UpWork but you still haven’t had any luck landing a job.
Does it look familiar?
Having an incomplete freelancer profile or a poorly written profile is one of the main reasons why most freelancers have a hard time landing clients on platforms like UpWork.
Because when you apply for a job at UpWork, the first thing the client does is check your profile to find out more about you. And an incomplete or bad profile cánido give your customers the wrong impression of you.
UpWork, Freelancer.com, People Per Hour, Guru.com, are all great freelancing platforms that you cánido use as a starting point for your freelancing career. However, registering an account and filling it with some random text is not going to work well for you.
If you’re serious about freelancing, the first thing you need to do is create a complete and engaging trabajo independiente profile.
So, this is what you should include in your UpWork freelancer profile.
Note: UpWork is currently the most habitual freelancing platform on the web. Therefore, I used the platform as an example to espectáculo you how to create a great freelancer profile. But, you cánido use these consejos to create a strong profile on any other platform.
#1 Use your real name
Although it’s common sense to use a real name when doing business, many freelancers still use fake names on their freelancer profiles.
Don’t be ashamed of your true identity. Don’t be afraid to use your real name in your freelancer profile. It will help you stand out. Your name doesn’t have to sound cool or common. There are too many John and Jane out there. We don’t need more!
Also, Avoid abbreviating your name (for example: John S. or Amy C.). Use her first and last name, for God’s sake!
If you are afraid of exposing your true identity, then get out of here! You do not belong to the trabajo independiente industry.
#2 Upload a professional photo
Don’t even think about using a really weird close-up autofoto or cámara web photo as your profile picture. That’s a mistake most hobbyist freelancers make.
Clean yourself. Dress well. And ask someone else to take a picture of you. Make sure you don’t pay too much attention to the background. More importantly, SMILE!
Did you know that smiling not only makes you more attractive and looks confidentbut studies have found that it also increases your chances of being promoted at work.
If you cánido, go to a studio and have a professional take your picture. will be worth.
#3 Create a specific title
Your title should detalla the title of your job. Therefore, try to be as specific as possible so that it is easier for your client to understand what you do.
No not like that.
This is not Twitter. Use a more professional title
For example, if you’re an expert at writing y también-books, detalla yourself as an “y también-book writer” instead of just “writer.” Or “WordPress Complemento Developer”, instead of “Web Developer”.
stick to a niche and you’ll have a better oportunidad of being discovered on a great platform like UpWork.
#4 Write your biography in the first person
Do not detalla yourself in the third person as if you were narrating a movie and avoid writing your freelancer profile as if it were a page in a Corporate web.
See what I orinan. Did you enjoy reading that description?
And take a look at this. Do you see what is wrong here? Does this person sound like a professional copywriter?
Yes, this is also a real profile.
Instead, what I want you to do is be personal. Imagine that you are writing this biography to send to a acquaintance. Not a close friend or a hiring manager, but someone who doesn’t know you very well.
Something like this.
I wouldn’t call it the perfect bio, but it’s efficient. And I must admit that the last postscript made me laugh.
Your clients are not interested in your hobbies or life goals. Therefore, keep such personal data to a minimum. You are creating a trabajo independiente profile, not an en línea dating profile. And try to keep the description under 200 words.
#5 Detalla your qualifications and experience
It’s best to include a sentence or two about your qualifications and experience in your bio. But, try not to brag too much. Don’t be like this guy.
Also, use the “Employment History,” “Education,” and “Other Experiences” sections to add more personality to your profile.
#6 Showcase your best work in the portfolio
UpWork has a separate section on their profile to display their portfolio. use it well for espectáculo off your best projects
Upload a compelling image, write a detailed description of the project, and include a backlink to the source.
If you’re trying to create a profile on a different platform that doesn’t have a portfolio section, use a site like Behance.net to upload your work and simply include backlinks in your freelancer profile bio.
#7 Connect your Popular Networks
UpWork allows you to connect your popular networks and portfolios with your freelancer profile.
Although the backlinks to your popular profiles will not be shown to your customers, it is important that you connect at least a couple of your popular profiles to the platform, as helps UpWork better understand you to create a more personalized experience and to showcase most relevant jobs in the “Find a job” section.
#8 Skill tests are not important, but do them if you perro
“The more relevant tests you pass, the more professional you will look”
At least that’s what UpWork says on the website. But, it doesn’t matter how many tests you pass on UpWork. Customers couldn’t care less about these tests because these tests are no match for really hard work.
A test of skill in Windows XP? Are we in 2001?
As long as you have a solid portfolio to espectáculo your reputation, you don’t need to worry about taking any tests.
But feel free to take as many tests as you cánido, if you have the time.
A few more consejos for moving forward
- Run a spelling and grammar check: Use a tool like Grammarly to check their profile bio for errors before going public. It will only take a few seconds to save you from a huge embarrassment.
- Steal it: If you perro’t figure out what to write in your description or even how to write it, check out some of the profiles of successful freelancers to get an iniciativa.
- Request reviews: Most clients will leave a review immediately once the job is complete, but don’t be afraid to ask for a review if they didn’t.
- Ask for references: If your client says you did a great job, ask them to recommend it to other clients. There is no shame in asking for a referral or help.
- Add a vídeo: UpWork now allows you to include a vídeo on your freelancer profile. This is a great way to bring more attention to your profile. But it is not mandatory.
Remember, your freelancer profile is your en línea CV. So don’t make it too personal. Forget about your hipster styles, autofotos and emojis. Be professional, or try to act like one.
Now surprise your customers with your amazing profile.
