Since we started this article, I have been mentioning something to you regarding the RAE and how the regulations changed the use of the diacritical accent in this sense.
The current situation is that the accent or diacritical tilde has been “forgotten”, that is, “officially” its use is no longer correctso regardless of whether this term is used as an adjective or an adverb, it must be written without an accent.
The reason why this has come to be this way is mainly due to the fact that the word ‘solo’ does not admit a tilde, according to the general rules of accentuation in Spanish.
Being a grave word ending in a voweladding a tilde would break those rules.
Now, in what situations is it possible to use ‘only’ with a diacritical accent?
Well, basically in those that have a ambiguous usethat is, sentences in which ‘alone’ or ‘only’ could perfectly be used.
Some examples of this would be:
- “Jamie cooks only at home”
- “Xavier to the park only Saturdays”
- “Gabriel sees only horror movies”
In these three examples that I have given you, the sentence works perfectly regardless of whether you use ‘only’ or ‘only’, that is, whether you use the adjective or the adverb.
