Find out where the Lime are available
Lime Scooters (and their biggest competitor, Bird Scooters) drop off in new cities on a monthly basis.
These scooter-sharing companies have expanded so rapidly that many pedestrians and city officials find it difficult to deal with them.
Scooters are gaining a lot of popularity among people who are looking to make their commute a little cheaper. The price of a lemon is very fácil: $1 to start, then 15 cents per minute. This price often makes them even cheaper than UberPOOL and Lyft Line. Dockless electric scooters are also eco-friendly and fun to ride.
Seemingly overnight, Lime Scooters has provided a «last mile» transportation option that people have been looking for. Simply put, they are perfect for those who only need to travel 1-2 miles and don’t want to worry about finding a aparcamiento spot for their car.
However, the Uber-like scooter model only works if there are hundreds, if not thousands, of them in each city. Otherwise, renters risk taking a scooter somewhere without reliable transportation.
Lime’s solution to this has been to drop off hundreds of scooters in dozens of cities across the United States.
Lime took a afín approach to Bird. They entered each new city in the middle of the night and left hundreds of scooters all over the city. Many times, this was to the complete surprise of city officials.
This caught a lot of people off guard, frustrating both city officials and ordinary citizens alike. Several major cities began confiscating the scooters, while others banned them outright.
The news has been quick to cover the scooter bans. But the media have not shown where are allowed to rent the Lime Scooters.
That’s why we put together this guide on Lime scooter locations. First, we’ll cover how you perro check for Lime Scooters in your area. We’ll then provide you with an up-to-date list of where you cánido get Lime Scooters.
Finally, we will discuss some of the places where scooters are prohibited. Based on our research, it seems that the bans are less widespread than the news seems. Most of the cities have welcomed the new mode of transportation.
In which cities are Lime scooters available?
The easiest way to check if your city allows Lime scooters is to open the Lime aplicación.
Once downloaded, the aplicación will display a map based on your location. If there are Lime Scooters in your area, you will see scooter icons on the map.

On the Lime website, they also have a form where you cánido vote to bring Lime Scooters to your city. They also provide an correo electrónico address where you perro correo electrónico them for Lime Scooters in your area.

Lime Scooters also offers electric scooter and bike rentals at a handful of college campuses, making walking between classes a breeze.
Keep in mind that just because a campus allows them doesn’t orinan the surrounding city allows scooters. So you perro mount them on campus, but as soon as you take them off campus, you could be violating local laws.

Where are Lime Scooters prohibited?
According to our research, the news of the Lime Scooter bans has been exaggerated. Some cities have taken action against the scooter company. However, the number of cities is much smaller than we anticipated.
We take this to orinan that Lime is working with cities to introduce its technology to new cities. Most of the bans are temporary, so perhaps scooters will become more widely available as cities adopt new legislation to accommodate them.
San Francisco
Surprisingly, home to hundreds of tech startups, it was one of the first places to place restrictions on Lime Scooters. But it wasn’t just Lime, they also kicked Bird.
Lime and Bird introduced their scooters to the Bay Area in late March 2018.
Lime officials announced than the scooters we removed in early June while they were trying to work with city officials. Part of the reason for the temporary removal was the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA). The agency reported nearly 2,000 complaints about the scooters during the two months they were allowed in the city.
The SFMTA allowed y también-scooters to return in August, but Lime was not one of the companies allowed to return.
The city offered two permits to other scooter companies Scoot and Skip. The companies were allowed to release 625 scooters each for 6 months. At the end of the 6 months, city officials could increase that number to 2,500 each, but it is entirely at their discretion.
We have not heard whether or not Lime will be able to archivo a permit application again in the future.
Cambridge, MA
You may have noticed from the list above that Lime is currently operating in quite a few Massachusetts cities.
We found articles referencing the ban on electric scooters in Cambridge, MA, but this leads us to more interesting findings. Home to many universities including Harvard and MIT, Cambridge seems like the perfect place for scooters.
After placing the ban, the city decided that they really want to bring them back. Unfortunately, they found out that the scooters are actually against state law.
Because? Because scooters don’t have brake lights or turn signals.
Both city officials and Lime representatives agreed that it will take some time before the scooters are allowed to return. Lime would not be able to retrofit the scooters, so laws would likely need to be changed.
We recommend reading this article from the Boston Globe if you are interested in learning more about the politics behind electric scooters in Massachusetts.
Beverly Hills and West Hollywood
Earlier this summer, West Hollywood and Beverly Hills voted separately to ban Lime scooters within city limits.
The Beverly Hills ban is scheduled to last six months. West Hollywood has not equipo a timeline for when the scooters might be reintroduced.
Los Angeles almost followed suit, but in September of this year, city officials had a change of heart and decided not to ban scooters in the city. The decision came with some caveats. Lime and Bird will be limited in the number of scooters they perro place in the city. Businesses are also responsible for removing scooters left on the sidewalks.
Why are Lime scooters banned?
As we mentioned, the news of electric scooter bans has been hyped.
While it’s true that scooters have struggled during their infancy in some key markets, they have been able to overcome most of their hurdles.
What obstacles exactly?
Let’s take a look at some of the reasons cities are frustrated with the craze for dockless electric scooters.
Your overnight introduction
Earlier this year, Lime entered cities at night, leaving hundreds of scooters out in the open. People woke up in the morning to find scooters everywhere. Some consumers were excited, but many people were caught off guard.
In fact, some government officials saw it as a semi-hostile approach to introducing the technology, especially given the potential safety concerns scooters bring.
Based on our research, it seems that most cities are open to scooters. As long as it is done responsibly. Cities want to equipo appropriate rules that keep bicyclists and pedestrians safe. They also want to make sure that companies like Lime are held accountable when something goes wrong.
security concerns
As we mentioned, security is a major concern. Lime tries to be very clear about its security protocols. When you download the aplicación, you must agree to its terms of service. These rules even state that riders must follow helmet laws, but we haven’t seen any kind of enforcement yet.
One of the biggest safety concerns is people riding the scooters on sidewalks, as this is a danger to both cyclists and pedestrians.
Emergency rooms are beginning to report a large increase in scooter-related injuries. There is also a story of a person who was charged with drink driving after hitting a pedestrian on a sidewalk. And a young man actually died in an electric scooter accident.
We believe that scooters perro be driven safely and responsibly. However, Lime needs to work with local governments on how to enforce these safety rules.
The mess
Speaking of sidewalks, one of the most common complaints about scooters is how many of them are left on public sidewalks.
This is not only annoying for pedestrians, but perro also block aisles for people in wheelchairs.
Vandalism
Given the lack of oversight by Bird and Lime, scooter vandalism is another big concern for city officials. There are dozens of reports of citizens defacing or destroying scooters, especially in cities like San Francisco.
Needless to say, this is a poor way to express frustrations at the rise of these two companies. For those who are upset about these scooters, contact your city officials and ask them to change the legislation on these scooters.
Will the Lime scooters be kept?
Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it), it seems that Lime Scooters are here to stay.
Venture capitalists are pouring big money into the company in the hope that it could be «the next Uber.»
It is true that the company has faced some legal battles, but the general reception has been positive. The number of cities that allow scooters far exceeds the number of cities with explicit bans.
The company emplees green technology and the sharing economy, two areas that we see prospering in the future.
We are entusiastas of the trabajo independiente billing model and are excited to see how it continues to evolve.
