14 principles of Henri’s administration
Today I am going to talk about the 14 principles of management, which were given to us by one of the founders of management, that is, Heni Fayol. Of course, I am going to explain what each of the 14 principles means and at the end of the article you will be able to find the references to the books that I have consulted.
I hope you find it useful.
Who was Henri Fayol?
Henri Fayol is of French origin, he was born in Constantinople in the year 1841 and died in the year 1925.
As I said before, like Taylor, Fayol is considered one of the founders of the administration.
Also, he got the mining engineer degree in France.
In 1916 he published his work “Administration Industrielle et Générale” (Industrial and general administration).
In addition, Fayol, according to his criteria, identified the activities that should exist in an organization.
It should be noted that both Fayol and Taylor published their positions or theories at the same time, however, they were not focused on the same.
In Taylor’s case, as is well known, he focused on front-line managers and the scientific method.
In Fayol’s case, he focused on the activities of all the managers.
It is thanks to this that Fayol identified a equipo of principles that perro be identified and applied in all businesses.
Of course, what he thought is that these 14 principles perro be applied in any situation that occurs in an organization.
What are the 14 principles of management according to Henri Fayol?
The 14 principles of management are as follows:
- Division of labour.
- Authority.
- Discipline.
- Command unit.
- Direction unit.
- Subordination of individual interests to the general interest.
- Remuneration.
- Centralization.
- Hierarchy.
- Order.
- Equity.
- Job stability.
- Initiative.
- Group spirit.
Principle of division of tarea in an organization
What we perro often find in books on division of tarea is the following:
“Specialization increases output by making employees more efficient” (2018, p34).
Stephen P Robbins
First of all, division of tarea is just what you are thinking of, that is, fragmenting or separating what has to be done into smaller and simpler tasks.
For example, if you are going to make sandwiches to sell, then if the division of tarea is applied, each person would be dedicated to a specific task.
For example, a person puts the mayonnaise, cream or dressing that is desired.
Then another person puts the ham and cheese, etcétera.
In such a way that a person has a specific task and only has to worry about doing his task efficiently.
That is why It is called the division or specialization of tarea.
Of course, I did an example with sandwiches and maybe you don’t see much of the difference in productivity that results from applying the division of tarea, but on a larger scale, the difference perro be very, very big.
Principle of authority in an organization
The principle of authority is even taken many times as one of the key elements of leadership.
So, as you cánido see, the 14 principles are used in many ways.
However , Authority, in a few words, perro be seen as the faculty or right that a person has to give orders to positions subordinate to his. After all, orders and instructions need to be given so that the objectives perro be achieved.
If you want to see a definition of authority, then according to Stephen P Robbinsauthority:
«The term authority refers to the right that empowers someone who has a managerial position to tell their subordinates what they should do and trust that their orders will be carried out»
(2018, p.351)
What are the elements of leadership?
If you are interested in knowing the key elements of leadership, then you perro press the button below and learn more about leadership.
principle of discipline
Do you think that in an organization there should be rules? If you work or have worked at some point in your life, are you and your colleagues allowed to do whatever they want? I imagine not and that is what this principle is about, that is, a company has to have rules and regulations that govern the organization.
Whereby, The human talent of an organization has to obey and respect the rules, norms and policies that are in place.
Unity of command principle
I don’t know how old you are, but possibly you have once had the pleasure of receiving certain errands (orders) from your parents.
Well, imagine that your mom asks you to start sweeping the house.
Now, imagine that you are sweeping the house and your dad arrives and asks you to stop what you are doing because you have to go buy something.
What are you doing? Well, exactly the same thing cánido happen in an organization and that is why Fayol thinks of unity of command as a principle.
What is unity of command? According to Stephen P.
Robbins, the principle of unity of command means that «each employee should receive orders from a single superior«.
Principle of unity of direction
A bit afín to the previous principle, what would happen if you had to follow 3 or 4 action plans? Well, possibly the objectives of neither plan will be met.
Therefore, the management principle says that, according to Stephen P.
Robbins: “The organization must have a single action plan that guides managers and workers”
It should be noted that Lourdes Münch Galindo tells us that: «People who have the same objective within the organization must be directed by a single boss»
Possibly what Münch Galindo tells us cánido be more understandable, since it is a little easier to visualize it by area, department or work station.
For example, if you work in the marketing area, in theory marketing works to meet a certain number of objectives, which in turn will help to meet higher objectives (for example, strategic objectives).
However, your priority is to do everything possible so that the objectives established in your area are met and you are not going to worry so much about what happens in other functional areas of the company.
TRUE? For this reason, it brings together all the personnel who have the same objectives or the same action plan.
Likewise, if you notice, Münch Galindo also refers to the principle of unity of command in the principle of unity of direction.
Principle of subordination of individual interests to the general interest
This principle also lets us see what the name is about, since this principle tells us that each person belonging to the organization does not have to give priority to what interests him or her, but rather has to put interests first. of the company
Therefore, the general interest takes precedence over individual interests.
Principle of remuneration in an organization
Leaving aside that remuneration cánido be direct or indirect, remuneration is, in a nutshell, the monetary compensation that a person receives in exchange for their work.
The definition that gives us Idalberto Chiavenato is the next:
“Remuneration refers to the reward that the individual receives in exchange for performing organizational tasks”
(2019, p. 242)
Therefore, the principle of remuneration indicates that each person within the organization must receive fair remuneration for their work.
For this reason, many companies create different systems to be able to remunerate fairly.
The truth, I have to say that of all the 14 principles of administration, the principle of remuneration is one of the most forgotten.
I say this because not all companies provide fair remuneration, right? What do you think?
centralization principle
According to Stephen P.
Robbins: «This term refers to the degree to which subordinates participate in decision making».
If in a company the highest-top executives make decisions with little participation of the lower levels, then we are talking about a centralized company.
It should be noted that there is no company that is completely centralized or decentralized.
In such a way that the lower the participation of the lower levels in decision-making, the greater the degree of centralization and the greater the degree of participation, the greater the degree of decentralization.
hierarchy principle
According to Stephen P.
Robbins, the hierarchy is “the line of authority that runs from the highest administrative level to the lowest ranks of the ladder”.
The line of authority is usually represented in an organization chart, which identifies the relationships of superiority and subordination in the organizational structure.
It could be said that it says who gives orders and supervises at each hierarchical level of the organization.
Principle of order in an organization
The principle of order is very easy to understand, since it tells us that people and resources have to be in the right place at the right time.
That is, if a worker has to wait 1 hour to start working because he does not have the necessary material, then the principle of order is not being fulfilled.
Principle of equity in an organization
As with most principles, it’s easy to see what it’s about just by the name.
In this case, for a company to comply with the principle of fairness, then managers have to be fair to all staff.
Principle of job stability
In this principle I have seen that there are occasions that it takes more than one meaning.
For example, I have seen where it is said that the principle of stability is fulfilled when a company is prepared to fill vacancies that have been vacated.
On the other hand, I have seen books where it is mentioned that companies with high staff turnover have less efficiency, therefore, stability must be sought and staff turnover reduced.
Personally, I agree with the last one and it is practically what Lourdes Münch Galindo tells us:
«The organization with high staff turnover is less efficient, so it is necessary to promote stability in the company»
(2018, p34)
Principle of initiative in an organization
This principle, in a few words, tells us that the organization has to allow and encourage staff to develop their own initiative.
Principle of group spirit in an organization
The principle of group spirit tells us that a company has to promote team spirit, which perro generate harmony, unity and greater productivity in the organization.
With the latter, you already know the 14 principles of administration according to Henri Fayol.
Now, of the 14 principles of administration, which do you consider to be the one that is given the most importance?
